Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad was established on 11th December 1961 by a group of highly motivated intellectuals led by the eminent physicist and space scientist, Dr. Vikram Sarabhai and the famous businessman, Mr. Kasturbhai Lalbhai. They also received support from the former Chief Minister of Gujarat, Dr. Jivraj Mehta. The founding Director of the Institute was Ravi John Matthai. IIM Ahmedabad was established with the combined support of the local industrialists and businessmen, central and state governments, the Harvard Business School and the Ford Foundation.
The idea of establishing a premier management institute was conceived with the aspiration of initiating the developmental progress of the nation in the decade after the attainment of independence in 1947. The goal was to turn India into an ideal democratic country dedicated to growth and equity.
The responsibility of managing IIMA is undertaken by the IIMA Society, which came into existence under the Societies Act, 1960. The IIMA Society constituted a Board of Governors. The Board of Governors had representation from the essential constituencies for catering to the nation’s desiderata. The Board of Governors runs the institution. The Indian Institutes of Management Act, 2017 has rendered IIMA an autonomous institution.
IIMA has been regarded as the premier management institute in India in many national and international surveys. IIMA became the first management institute in India to be awarded EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) accreditation by the EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development) in 2008. IIM Ahmedabad was ranked as the top B-school of India in the MHRD-NIRF rankings of 2017. It was also ranked as the number one business institute by the Business Today and Outlook magazines in 2017.
The motto of IIMA is ‘Vidya viniyogadvikasa' which means the ‘development through the distribution or application of knowledge'. Its vision consists of 'educating leaders of enterprises'. This vision has led IIMA to come up with a unique three-pronged approach of connecting, nurturing and growing.
IIMA continually manoeuvres to improve the educational standards by communicating with students, staff, researchers, alumni and corporates. The institution aims to induce high efficiency and productivity among the students by aiding them to acquire skills such as hard work, dedication and working in alliance. Its objective is to provide innovative education by developing student-centred curricula that keep up with the current practices of the industries.
The IIM Ahmedabad campus encompasses 106 acres of land. The campus consists of the academic blocks, staff offices, faculty offices, student hostels and faculty accommodation, the Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Library, the R.J. Mathai Auditorium, the Louis Kahn Plaza, the International Management Development Centre, the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Management Development Centre and the Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship. The facilities include air-conditioned classrooms, cafeteria, gym, convenience store, labs, sports complex and Wi-Fi.
IIMA has partnered with a lot of educational institutions worldwide for the successful execution of the postgraduate programmes, executive MBA programmes and research programmes.
IIM Ahmedabad provides training to the officials through its Executive Education programmes so that they become well-acquainted with the project management and other management practices. This helps them in acquiring skills that are necessary for their profession.
IIM Ahmedabad possesses the affiliation of over 75 reputed business schools worldwide. It also has dual degree arrangement with some of the most famous management institutes such as ESCP Europe, University of Cologne ESSEC Business School in Paris, HEC Paris and Bocconi University. The students who go on Exchange Programmes are eligible for scholarships.

The placements of the IIM Ahmedabad students are commissioned by the Placement Committee elected by the students. The placements for the PGP and the PGP FABM can be categorised into summer placements during the first year and final placements after graduation. The placement for graduate students comprises of two stages. In the laterals process, the firms conduct interviews with the students who have work experience and hire them in the mid-managerial positions of the company.
There are various clubs in IIM Ahmedabad that are engaged in the upliftment of the society by raising awareness about education among the underprivileged people. The students of IIM Ahmedabad educate the poor children in their free time. They also help the students to complete their homework and to prepare for their examinations. The underprivileged children are given the opportunity to explore their talents and participate in painting, dance, crafts, singing and other extracurricular activities. Besides concentrating on their academics, the students of IIM Ahmedabad focus on the social upliftment through funding drives.
